Security is one of
the major day to day occupations of the organisation. Kenya Ferry
Services has put in place elaborate security measures intended to
forestall any breakdown in security procedures. The Kenya Police and
hired private guards are always at hand to ensure compliance to
security requirements by the users. The corporation also works in
collaboration with the Port Police and has built two police booths,
one on the Island side and the other on the Mainland to ensure full
time presence of the police.
A recent security audit certified Kenya Ferry services Ltd compliant
with International Ship and Port Security Facility code (ISPS) by
virtue of measures undertaken to comply with the provisions of that
code.
Some of the requirements KFS were required to
implement were :
1) Fencing operation area to keep off non-ferry users.
2) Erection of surveillance towers, which are manned by trained
security guards, equipped with advanced surveillance equipment such
as binoculars and telescopes.
3) Robust and strong gates have been erected on operation area
entrances and exits.
4) Effective communication system with Kenya Ports authority,
Lighthouse and other agencies such as the Kenya Navy.
5) Anti terrorist check/Security: All vehicles boarding the ferries
must pass through security check points manned by Kenya
Anti-terrorist Police.
Other Security measures that KFS has put in
place include:
Security on ramp approaches- Hired private guards have enabled the
corporation to successfully control crowds during embarking and
disembarking from the ferries and in the ferries. Through hire of
the guards, Kenya Ferry Services has also ensured consistency in the
smooth flow of traffic. The guards are deployed in specific points
to control both crowds and traffic.
Security onboard ferries- The guards also ensure systematic inflow
and outflow of both human and motor traffic where motor traffic
leaves the ferries before handcarts, bicycles and pedestrians. The
private guards assist corporation’s staff in these duties.
Above all there is annual security assessment in our premises and
report submitted to KPA for incorporation to the major master plan,
which is eventually submitted to the Ministry of Transport for
International Maritime Organization (IMO) consumption. We intend to
install pedestrian’s security gadgets sensors.
